The "Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" was a mystery type television series produced by Granada television for British audiences. The episodes are based upon the original scripts and adapted stories written by Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle; the show aired for British audiences from 1984 to 1994. The series was created by Michael Cox for the ITV network in the United Kingdom, starring its most memorable character Jeremy Brett (born Peter Jeremy William) as Sherlock Holmes the detective and revolves around Sherlock's use of his extraordinary skill of observation and wit to solve mysterious cases brought to his attention.

To this day Brett is most remembered for his stellar performance as the popular detective. Sherlock Holmes most trusted friend and colleague, Dr. Watson, is played by David Burke but only in two adventure series before leaving the show entirely in order to spend more time with his family and more so his young son; who incidentally also become an actor. David Burke would later be replaced by the capable Edward Hardwicke who would go on to act in other successful roles.

The show is made from 41 of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle 60 Sherlock Holmes stories. Each episode runs for one hour of which there were 36 to make a season and 5 feature length specials. Later episodes of the series though were later produced by June W. Davies. Other contributing writers included John Hawkesworth - who is also credited for developing the series for television and writing many appreciated episodes, T. Bowen, Jeremy Paul and Alan Plater.

Other cast members who were regular in the show aside from Burke, Brett and Hardwicke, included Mrs. Hudson the housekeeper played by Rosalie Williams and Inspector Lestrade of the Scotland's intelligence agency otherwise known as Scotland Yard, played by Jeavons Colin.

Other minor roles in the series in Sherlock Holmes brother Mycroft played by Charles Gray and of course Sherlock Holmes arch enemy the Prof. Moriarty played by E. Porter; Moriarty's character only appears in the show in the second series of the adventures. Viewers of the show may recognize a young but familiar face of Jude Law who plays the servant Jo Barnes in the episode that aired in 1991
